CX Leadership resilience: Why getting back up Is your greatest skill
There is a small, slightly ridiculous holiday that has stuck with me.
Upsy Daisy Day. A day dedicated to getting back up, starting fresh, and approaching the world with optimism.
My first reaction was: who comes up with these things?
My second reaction was: actually, there is something important here for CX leaders.
Optimism is not blind. It is fuel.
If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that CX leadership resilience starts with optimism. Not blind optimism.
We all know organizations can be messy. Budgets disappear. Priorities shift. Projects move slower than you planned. And sometimes a stakeholder says “no” before you’ve even finished your sentence.
No, I mean the quieter kind of optimism.
The kind that walks you into the next meeting after three rejections already. The kind that keeps you championing the customer when everyone else’s attention has drifted elsewhere.
Because most of us are not working on problems that can be fixed in a week. We are trying to change habits, cultures, decisions, and behaviors. That takes time. Optimism is often the only fuel that keeps you moving.
Teflon and Bamboo: a resilience model for CX leaders
I think about CX leadership resilience in terms of two materials: Teflon and Bamboo.
As a CX leader, you need a layer of Teflon. Not because you don’t care, but because you can’t afford to take every setback personally. The difficult email. The cancelled project. The steering committee that just doesn’t seem to get it. If all of that sticks, this profession becomes exhausting fast.
At the same time, you need to be like Bamboo.
Strong enough to bend when circumstances change. Resilient enough to rise back up. When things go off the rails, bamboo bends with the storm. And then it rises again.
Teflon keeps you from breaking. Bamboo gets you back up.
The leaders I admire most
When I look at the CX leaders who are genuinely making an impact, their greatest asset is rarely their intelligence or their technical knowledge.
It is that they keep going.
They keep building relationships.
They keep believing that change is possible, even when the evidence is temporarily against them.
Research backs this up. People who regularly reflect on what is going well recover faster from setbacks and are better equipped to navigate uncertainty. Gratitude and optimism are not soft skills. They are leadership skills.
And that made me reflect on my own gratitude. For the CX leaders who choose to work with me. For the trust my speaking clients place in me. For the conversations, ideas and friendships that have grown from a shared desire to make customer experience work.
Which is why I want to pass that on to you.
The conversations behind closed doors
Here is something I notice consistently, in coaching sessions, masterclasses, and one-on-one conversations with CX leaders.
The challenges that keep people up at night are rarely about journey mapping, governance models, or NPS dashboards.
They are about influence. Confidence. Visibility. Authority. Finding your voice in the boardroom. Creating real momentum. Making the impact you know you’re capable of.
Those are leadership conversations. Not CX-methodology conversations.
And that is exactly why I created the CX Leadership Masterminds.
If you recognize yourself in any of this, I’d love to have a conversation. Not a sales pitch. Just for a genuine conversation about where you are today, where you would like to go and whether the CX Leadership Masterminds could help you get there. You can book a time here.
One small challenge before you move on
Take a moment. Think of three things you are grateful for right now, in your work or in your CX journey.
Then send a short message to someone who has made your work a little easier, a little more meaningful, or simply a little more fun.
You’ll brighten their day. And maybe they’ll do the same for someone else.
Upsy daisy. My blue dress and I are cheering you on.
Until next time, keep spicing up your Customer Experience leadership.
